SALOON HISTORY IN LAKE O

The January meeting of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society featured an overview of the bars, saloons and taverns in our village's history. The first saloon was built by Charles Scheidt in 1888 and was located on the south end of Main Street approximately in the location of the present day Page Memorial Building. This saloon served the village for many years later being operated by Andrew Reahm and then James Scheidt. While James Scheidt operated the business it became the property of the Haehnle Brewing Company of Jackson, Michigan, from 1894-1904. The business later changed hands several times and was operating as late as 1908-9. Shown above is this business advertising the Haehnle Beer. Many other bars located in the village over the years and many memories and trivia were shared at this meeting. It is planned to compile this information into some format so anyone with additional information on bars and saloons is welcome to contact the society.

QUILT SHOW COMING SOON!

The annual Quilt Show will be held Saturday, January 28, from 10-5 and on Sunday January 29 from 2-5 p.m. This has been a very successful event each year and features many new and vintage quilts. NORTH JORDAN SCHOOL

What an awesome picture that recently surface at the museum! This vintage scene depicts a reunion of the North Jordan School. This school was located in Woodland Township of Barry County and is within the Lakewood School District. There is no identification of anyone and it appears to be outside of a barn. Further research may help pinpoint a year to this but if anyone can add anything let us know!

ALTON NYE-LAKE O PHARMICIST

This past summer during the Depot Day Celebration the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society honored local pharmacies from our history and present day. Alton Nye was an early pharmacist practicing his business for most of his life time here. It was a pleasure to have Alton Nye's grandson Dean Kelley present for the special tribute. Mr. Kelley brought with him several photographs, including the above, to share for this occasion. Mr. Nye is pictured on the right with another man who is unidentified. It looks like they caught their limit of fish that day!

LOHS Souvenir Book

FOURTH GRADE TOUR

Each year the Fourth Grade classes from West Elementary School visit the Museum. This is a highlight as the history of our village is shared with these eager learners. Previous to the museum visist, Elaine Garlock, gives a historical talk. Then the classes each walk to the Museum noting historical spots along the way. Classes are taken through the Depot and the Frieght Station with a sort of "historical scavenger hunt." Thank you to the Fourth Grade teachers who incorporate this into their Michigan History Unit.

THE NEW YORKER

One of the most popular items on display at the Lake Odessa Museum is a 1964 New Yorker. Shown above is Emmi Klein a great grand daughter of the original owner of this car Allie Klein Kluinsteker. Emmi recently toured the museum as part of the Fourth Grade Tour and was proud to show off her grandmother's car to her class mates.

LAKEWOOD CLASS OF '66

The Class of 1966 of Lakewood High School held a reunion the last week-end of September. There were many activities and gatherings and quite a few visited the Museum as part of their week-end walk down memory lane. Shown here are four from the class: Marti (Livingston) Lind, Bill Mathis, Terry Adams and Terri (Mulliken) Allen. It was great to see so many visit Lake Odessa and rekindle old friendships!

FARM DAYS AT THE MUSEUM

The September Display focused on the agricultural history of our area. Many photos, farm tools and implements and other historical items filled the museum relating this important part of community. Several antique tractors greeted the visitors as they entered the parking lot and a big crowd enjoyed this first time display.

KILL KARE KOTTAGE

Many of the early cottages on Jordan Lake bore names that distinguished them as desirable places to vacation. The Good Shepard was one of the earliest but the Kill Kare Kottage soon followed. This cottage was located to the east of the Good Shepard and Water Witch and attracted a good deal of business. Fishing, swimming and boating were popular and this business featured each. The owners of this business or the builders of this cottage have not been determined...does anyone have information on the Kill Kare Kottage???

Here it is April 2011 and the snow is blowing! In April of 1947 heavy rains produced flooding throughout the area. This view shows Jordan Lake flooding over into where Roberts' Cottages were located at the east end of the lake. The waters rose high enough to go over the road and make this area impassable. Does anyone remember 1947 and the floods of that year??

3 X 4 CLUB

The following article was taken from an April 1970 issue of the Lake Odessa Wave: 3 X 4 CLUB FOUNDED MARCH 11, 1910-Members of the 3 X 4 Club gathered at Bonnie's Cafe Wednesday in commemoration of their organization's founding 60 years ago on March 11, 1910. The original club met as a group of farm wives north of Lake Odessa at the home of Mrs. Etta Foght for their first meeting and Mrs. Ella Johnson was the first president, Mrs. Josephine Hunt secretary-treasurer and Mrs. Abbie Johnson corresponding secretary. Their object was to promote sociability among neighbors and to forget for a while the care of home. Reading and good literature and visiting the sick in the community were parts of their program. Besides Mrs. Foght, Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. Johnson, other charter members were Mrs. Laura Swarthout, Mrs. Lettie Curtis, Mrs. Sarah Foght, Mrs. Nellie Culp, Mrs. Charles Stewart, Mrs. Mary Jones, Mrs. Josie Root and Mrs. Frances Curtis. Mrs. Grethel (Swarthout) Walter is the only daughter today of a charter member. Mrs. Nettie Curtis is a daughter-in-law and Mrs. Fannie Curtis is a grand-daughter of charter members. The club now has 12 members and one honorary member, namely Opal Bartlett, Iva Birman, Grethel Walter, Ethel Aalderink, Kay Possehn, Lucille Walter, Gaylia Rathbun, Naoma Shaw, Florence Ritter, Carlene Lindner, Nettie Curtis, Fannie Curtis and Viola Cunningahm. The members were served a ham and chicken dinner by Bonnie and her helpers and a good time was enjoyed be all present. The club still meets on the third Tuesday of the month for a 1:00 o'clock dinner, the same as the original club. The next meeting is to be held at the home of Nettie Curtis, with Opal Bartlett as co-hostess.

THE GOOD SHEPARD

About the year 1906 one of the first cottages on Jordan Lake became known as the "Good Shepard Resort." Dan Shepard, with his wife Hannah, began a tourist business featuring the lake and all its assetts. Dan promoted the leisure activities such as fishing and the resort became well known throughout Michigan. The Resort was located at the southern most point of where Fourth Ave. ends today at the lake. Next door was located another cottage called the "Water Witch." The two buildings were later connected to form one larger Inn. The resort remained in business for many years ending its career in the late 1940's. The building was later used as an apartment building. It was torn down in the past few years following an interior fire.

DR. MARINUS A. HOFFS

One of the permanent displays at the Lake Odessa Museum focuses on the Medical Profession in Lake Odessa. We are fortunate to have the desk, chair and other items used by Dr. M. A. Hoffs during his practice from 1929-1968. These artifacts relate the history of Dr. Hoffs and the great service that he provided to this area. The display includes the many other doctors that served Lake Odessa since the early 1880's. The photo above shows Dr. Hoffs seated at the desk which is now on display at the museum.

ALGODON/ANWAY SCHOOL HOUSE

What an awesome picture this is! The Algodon School (also called the Anway School) boasted a large enrollment in it's early years. This picture taken in the late 1880's gives a wide view including the school house, front yard and the students. The school, which was located in the northwest part of Odessa Township, was one of the first in the area and many early pioneer families sent their children here to learn readin', ritin' and rithmitic!!!

TOTALLY LAKE O!

The recent exhibition of "TOTALLY LAKE O!" was a great success. The displays featured items manufactured or produced in Lake Odessa over the years. It was quite amazing to see many of these items and the great variety.....from canned vegetables to metal pieces fabricated for machines. The photo above shows an ironing board manufactured by the Lake Odessa Manufacturing Company in the late 1890's. A recent acquisition of the Society was one of these ironing boards...which made a great display. A local visitor brought in and loaned a "Water-Witch" Fishing Lure which is quite a novelty and brought a great deal of attention. All in all the week-end was of interest to many as the spotlight was on "Totally Lake O!"

THE VILLAGE PARK

Many memories are connected with the Lake Odessa Village Park. It has been a focal point of Lake Odessa since its beginning and continues to host each new generation. Its trees guard the village with their shade and provide a harbor of rest and peace for all who visit. PERE MARQUETTE IN SUNFIELD

The Pere Marquette Railroad extends to the west of Lake Odessa toward Clarksville and to the east toward Sunfield. The history of this area is closely linked to the history of the Railroad in each of these communities. This photo shows a crew working on the railroad near Sunfield in perhaps the 1930's. No identification is connected with the photo so the faces remain nameless. What a wonderful "bit" of history is shown in their faces....a hard day's labor yet greatful for the job!

The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society strives to chronicle history of not only this village but the surrounding area. It is defined generally as any location within the Lakewood School District....and this includes Clarksville! Clarksville has an active Historical Group but over the years many items connected with that area have been donated to our society. This photo shows a creamery in Clarksville...but no other information. Can anyone help out with where it was located, when it was in operation and any other details that may be of interest? It is a wonderful historical photo but further information is needed to give it a story! Can you help!! Let us know if you can!

GAS STATION HISTORY

The February meeting of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society featured a history of our local gas stations. President John Waite shared some early background concerning this business and then opened the floor for additional input. Many had come prepared with their own memories and stories concerning the many stations over the years. Photographs added a rich blend as many recalled having "full service," hearing the bell ringing when driving in and the cold pop from the machine. A display covering this history is being collected and any additional information or photos would be greatly welcomed. The photo above shows the stone station located on Fourth Avenue and First Street. This unique building remains today and is an historic testament to the gas station business.

CHRISTMAS MEMORY TREES 2010

The Annual Christmas Memory Tree Program was held on Thursday, November 11, at the Lake Odessa Freight Station Museum. Approximately 60 gathered for the tenth year of this holiday tradition. Ornaments were hung as the names were read of almost 600 loved ones. These ornaments have all been donated in memory of someone and represent our family, friends and neighbors. Shown in the photos are above Betty Erickson hanging an ornament in memory of her father, Lee A. Hazel. Below is Rosemary Hickey hanging an ornament in memory of her sister, Marie O'Mara. This is a special time that begins our holiday season at the museum. The Memory Trees will remain up through January....come and check them out!

DARBY SCHOOL HISTORY

A recent donation to the Lake Odessa Area Historical Scoiety was a project completed by Jack and Elaine (Allarding) Garnaat and Phyllis (Lepard) Olmstead. The project is a collected book form and focuses on the history of the Darby School. This rural school was located in southern Campbell Township which later became part of the Lakewood School District. The book includes photographs of the school and students throughout the years, a copy of the abstract and deed for where the school property is located, documents related to teachers and students, a list of teachers plus a great deal of additional information related to the Darby School. This wonderful history is an addition to the collection of rural school histories that are housed in the School Room at the Lake Odessa Museum Complex. This history and others are available for public viewing and anyone interested in the Darby School or others are encouraged to stop by. There are still many other rural schools that need to be chronicled and it is hoped that this project will inspire others to do the same. Thank you for this great contribution and for all the work that was put into this!

The shot is taken from the intersection of Fourth Ave. and Second Street looking north. Notice the closed booth has rugs hanging and the other booths seem to be selling wares. GERMAN POW DISPLAY

On Monday evening, July 5, 2010, the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society was pleased to be able to dedicate a new display at the museum. The display focuses on the German Prisoner of War Camp that was located in Lake Odessa in 1944 and 1945. This historically significant event is interpreted through photographs, artifacts and documents highlighting the camp. It was a distinct privilege to have the widow and family of Heinz Hanft, a former prisoner in the Lake Odessa Camp, present for the dedication of this display. Shown above is Edith Hanft viewing the display and a picture of the Hanft family present for the dedication. A large crowd filled the museum to hear accounts of the camp and its impact on the war. Thank you to the Hanft family and to all who contributed to make this display a reality. The display is a permanent feature of the Lake Odessa Museum and may be viewed during the last week-end of each month and during special events.

LOHS ALUMNI WEEK-END

You just never know what will happen during the Lake Odessa High School Alumni Reunion week-end! It was a great turn out for the event held the last Saturday in June. The Museum was open with displays from 1888 through the Lakewood School System today. Shown above is Elaine (Allarding) Garnaat (Class of 1945) in the bath tub that was in her home on Tupper Lake St. The bath tub is now part of the collection of the Lake Odessa Museum. The Allarding home later became the Lake Odessa Hospital and the bath tub was donated as part of that history. Elaine just couldn't help getting in and bringing back the memories of "bath time." Many other alumni visited the museum and continue to be great supporters of our Lake Odessa history.

MARIAN KLEIN-GRAND MARSHAL 2010

Congratulations to Marian Klein on being selected as the 2010 Grand Marshal for the Lake Odessa Fair Parade. Marian was chosen by the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society for her dedication and community service. A reception was held at the Lake Odessa Freight Station following the parade with a standing only crowd. Marian has been a member of our society for many years and is a faithful supporter. Good job Marian!

It was a privilege to have Fred Morris in attendance at the recent Veterans Hall of Fame Tribute. Fred is a veteran of World War II and has donated his uniform to the Lake Odessa Museum. This photo shows Fred posing next to his uniform as we recognize his service to our country. Thank you to Fred and to many others who have donated items to make our military display so great! The collection continues to expand as we relate the history of our local veterans.

The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society is pleased to announce the selection of Kenneth LeRoy Johnson as the newest veteran honored as part of the Veteran's Hall of Fame. Kenneth was nominated by his children: Melody (Johnson) LaNew, Mike Johnson, John Johnson and Teri (Johnson) Duda who are shown above receiving the 2010 Veterans Hall of Fame Certificate. The tribute, which was held on May 28, was well attended with many others attending over the week-end. There were many new displays and those who brought items relating the military history of our local veterans. A complete history of Kenneth Johnson will be posted on this site soon.....we are honored to pay tribute to him and all our veterans!!

SUMMER AT THE BEACH!

May is half over and summer is on its way! Memories of Lake Odessa include hot summer days at the beach at Jordan Lake. Shown above is a scene at the Wenonah Resort (which was located approximately where the Bowling Alley is today). The beach and resort were a popular place for vacationers to come from the city. The crowd in this picture is large and shows the popularity of this attraction. Summer is on its way and many will once again make memories of good times here in Lake Odessa!

MILITARY TRIBUTE

The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society will be hosting the 5th Military Tribute and Display over the Meorial Day Week-end. Shown above are three of last year's honored veterans-Lyle Faulkner, Nyle Yates and Wendell Scheidt. The Tribute for this year will be held on Friday, May 28, at 7 p.m. We will recognize the past recipients and announce the selections for the 2010 inductees into the Veteran's Hall of Fame. This is a wonderful way to honor our veterans and to pay respect as a community for the sacrifice many have made. The Museum will be open the entire week-end with a display of all local veterans. Items to be loaned or donated are being sought for this annual event. Please contact the society if you have any items of interest. The hours for the event will run on Sat. May 29 from 10-2, Sunday May 30 from 2-5 and Monday, May 31 from 12-5.

St. Herman's Tour

It was a great learning experience as the Society toured St. Herman's Orthodox Church in Woodbury this past Thursday evening. Society member, Darya Carney, presented the history of the church building (the former Woodbury United Brethren Church) and the history of the Orthodox Church. She related the meaning of many items in the church and the stories of the various icons painted by Darya. The group gained a great knowledge of the Orthodox faith and many questions followed the presentation. The church has done an amazing job at restoration and continues to work on the project. Thank you to St. Herman's for sharing yourselves and the historical background of this church with us!!

TOUR OF ST. HERMAN'S ORTHODOX CHURCH

The general meeting of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society will be held in Woodbury, Michigan, at St. Herman's Orthodox Church on Thursday, May 13. Upon the invitation of Father Michael Carney we will meet at the church at 7 p.m. and given a tour of the work that this parish has done on the church building. The structure was formerly the Woodbury United Brethren Church and since St. Herman's has occupied the church a great deal of renovation has taken place. This promises to be a great opportunity to visit a local historic structure being used for a specific purpose in today's modern world. Watch here for more details.

The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society will be holding a RUMMAGE SALE on Friday, April 23 from 9 to 5 and on Saturday April 24 from 9 to 2. There are always lots of treasures to be found so make sure to come on out!! Donations are being accepted of all saleable items. SOUP SUPPER A SUCCESS!!!

Soup and Salad were the menu for last Friday night's fund raiser. It was a great evening and a great crowd. Nearly 100 were served with only two bowls of soup left over!! Thank you to all who supported this effort in any way. The Society continues to raise funds toward the exterior siding of the Hosford House. A bid has been accepted and the goal is to begin work in September. There is lots happening at the Lake Odessa Museum so keep posted and plugged in!!!

DO YOU REMEMBER THE WATER TOWER?

For many years the water tower was a focal point on the street scene of Lake Odessa. This landmark was torn down quite a few years ago but many will remember it with the big letters proclaiming the name of our village. This view is a great one of Tupper Lake Street looking to the east. There is no date marked but must be in the 1940's.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF ART!

One unique display at "It's Art" was presented by four generations of one family. The Lambert family has been part of Lake Odessa history for many years and their talent witnessed by many. Several oil paintings done by Clare Lambert represented the first generation. These included a painting of the Depot and one of Smith Brothers Elevator. The next generation included two of Clare's children, Jack Lambert and Jean Schwarthing. Shown above is one painting done by Jack of a barn in New York. Many that attended the art display remarked that Jack had been their art teacher in high school. The next generation included art work by Ann DeHoog and Anita Villanueva. Anita is shown above sharing with spectators the gift their family has been blessed with. The fourth generation was represented by Abby DeHoog and Elijah Villanueva. Thank you to the Lambert family for sharing their talent for this display and through the years with all in our community.

WOW! IT'S ART!!!

The recent art display, "IT'S ART" was one of the most successful events this year. It was a great response with over 43 artists being showcased. There were over 150 pieces of art on display with a wide variety of styles, ages and methods. Those that came to enjoy the week-end were very pleased and many comments were shared concerning future possibilities of similar events. Shown above is the 6 foot bird created by Tony Jackson. This was a popular work with many interested in Tony's creative sculptures. One of the oldest paintings on display was done by Mary Powell in the 1890's. It is the round plate shown above and was first displayed in an art show done by Michigan State University in the 1970's. The top picture shows local artist Karen Anway with a display of her works ranging from scenic to still life. The Freight Station Museum was filled with treasures and we appreciate the wonderful response of everyone involved.....the best response we have is WOW!

MAIN STREET LAKE ODESSA

This view of Main Street was taken from the second story of McCartney's Store on the northwest corner of Fourth Avenue and Second Street. It is looking to the south and gives a great view of the stores. No date is on this photo which was recently donated to the Historical Society. It appears to be in the 1920's and may be during some type of celebration...notice the decorations on the lamp posts and at the far end of Main Street there is some type of banner across the street. Anyone have any ideas?? It's a great view of our home town!!

DOLL AND TOY SHOW!

The Annual Doll and Toy Show will be coming to the Lake Odessa Museum March 27 and
28. Plans are underway for a great display with many new items having been donated to the museum in the past year. This is an event that draws many from near and far and always promises to have something of interest to all. Watch for more details soon and make plans to be a part of this year's show.

IT'S ART!!!

Coming on February 27 and 28 to the Lake Odessa Museum will be a brand new display centered on the theme-"IT'S ART!" The display will focus on local artwork, past and present, and will include all styles of visual arts-oil, water color, sculpture, photography, etc. The emphasis will highlight the great amount of talent that this area has both in times past and the present. We are hoping that many will bring out that "masterpiece" that has been in storage and help us to create a unique presentation. For those who currently are involved in art it is hoped that you will also share your talents. Shown above is the Society President holding an oil painting done in the 1930's by Esther L. Chili Supper On A Cold Night!

The chili was good and it was hot! The weather was cold and everyone was hungry! It was a great night for the chili supper at the Lake Odessa Museum with approximately 75 in attendance. A good profit was realized and a good time was shared by many. Four different types of chili were offered ranging from mild (some called it "chili light") all the way to the spicy style. A unique german chili was offered with sauerkraut and spaetzle to top it off. Many were pleasantly surprised at how delicious this was and by the end of the night the pot was empty! Thank you to all who worked and donated toward this project. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society continues to generate funds for upcoming project and all donations are appreciated.

ANWAY FAMILY QUILT

One of the quilts on display at the recent Quilt and Textile Show focused on the history of the Anway Family. The Anways were early settlers in Odessa Township with many descendants spread across the United States. This wonderful heirloom was created by a granddaughter of Verl and Edna Anway as a raffle prize at the Annual Anway Reunion in 2009. Shown at the center are Verl and Edna surrounded by blocks bearing the images of each of their children. TREASURES IN THE WALL

Recently, a young couple was remodeling their home on Sixth Ave., in Lake Odessa, when they discovered some items in a wall. Tucked inside the wall they found letters, postcards, envelopes, advertising, a grade school diploma and a few dishes. These items all apear to have come from the Kart/Sargeant family and underneath all the dust and dirt lies a little bit of history. Two of the letters were written by Leo Kart in 1944 during World War II. One letter was to his mother, Esther Kart, and the other to his sister. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society was glad to accept these items as a donation to the museum and will add them to our collections. Many have asked "why did people put stuff in the wall?" Does anyone have a good answer? The letter shown above is dated Sept. 10, 1944, and reads as follows:

"Pvt. Leo B. Kart 36956256 Co. H 3rd Group 1st Regt. Camp Reynolds Greenville PA Sept. 10, 1944-

Dear Mom,
I am getting along o.k. and feeling fine so I have nothing to kick about. We sure have some swell fellows here. I don't think it is half bad here. I suppose LeRoy is about ready to go to the navy. I know one thing, he won't run so much there, that's what makes it bad for so many fellows. Here we can only get a 12 hour leave so I think that was what was the matter with Raymond and Bob. Although they get a lot of K.P., and other details here every day, and sometimes at night. I got your letter and those papers you sent back. There is some of the fellows here with me that was at Camp Lee with me. So it isn't so bad. And I got a lot of new buddies here too. Did Clare Lambert hear any more about Jack? I sure hope he is on his way back. There was a bus wreck here last night but I don't know whether anyone got hurt or not. I sure am glad Carol got an ice cream cone. Well that is all I can think of this time so will close and try to write again. P.S. Oh, yes, there were around 1800 War Prisoners at Camp Lee.

CELEBRATION QUILTS

One of the displays at the recent Quilt and Textile Show featured three Quilts crafted in celebration of the Fifth Annivesary of the Adoption of three children. Grandma Chris created a quilt for each of her grandchildren in recognition of this important event in 2009. What a wonderful way to share memories and celebrate family and love. The quilts are treasured by each grandchild and remind them of their importance to the family. Shown above are Bailey, Tanner and Rheegan and then all of them with Grandma Chris. A STITCH IN TIME

The 2010 Quilt and Textile Show is now just a "Stitch in Time!" It was a great week-end with an awesome display. Over 50 quilts and many various textile items were on display ranging in items from the 1850's right up to 2010. Every color, pattern and style imaginable was on view with interest in a variety of items. The oldest textile was from 1851 and was a woven coverlet from the Heeter family. A quilt from the 1860-70 era represented an early star pattern. The most recent display featured a quilt completed in January 2010....how wonderful to have it at our Show!! Another interesting display focused on the soon to be open Quilt Store in Lake Odessa. Many were intrigued by the fabrics, patterns and projects this display showcased. This was a successful project and many thanks to all who particpated!

This past week-end was a busy one at the Lake Odessa Museum Complex. The 18th Annual Christmas 'Round The Town event was held throughout Lake Odessa and the museum was stop Number Twelve on the route! We hosted 8 crafters plus our annual Bake Sale and the Depot Gift Shop. Many enjoyed the Christmas Memory Trees with approximately 50 new ornaments added this year. The crowd was great and a wonderful time was had as we started the holiday season.

About fifty gathered at the Lake Odessa Museum on Thursday, November 12, to begin the holiday season. The annual "Christmas Memory Trees" were the feature with nine trees filled with over 500 ornaments in memory of loved ones. The list of each name was read as the ornaments were hung by volunteers, family members and friends. This beautiful program helps remind us of the memories of those passed on as we celebrate the greatest gift of LOVE at Christmas. The trees will remain on display throughout November and December and anyone is welcome to have an ornament placed on the 2009 tree. No....it wasn't like the movie!! But...it was a great time of dining, conversation and enjoyment at the Lake Odessa Museum. A good crowd was present for a five course meal that "filled" everyone to the top! It was great to see some new faces and many others who faithfully support the efforts of the Society. CIGAR BOX DISCOVERY

A recent donation to the Lake Odessa Museum has sparked some interest in a direction that was not expected. The Medical Profession was honored at this year's Depot Day and a Society member brought in a large stack of prescriptions that local doctor's had signed over the years. The prescriptions were in an old cigar box which had been kept in excellent condition. After going through the prescriptions and studying the historical value of these...the empty cigar box was set down. Later, in picking the box up, a surprise was discovered. The cigar box itself was a product of an early Lake Odessa cigar maker! The "risque" label, as seen above, noted that the maker was A. J. DeVoe. Inspection of the Lake Odessa Centennial History did not reveal any information concerning this business or the cigar maker. At this time, there is very little information but records are being sought to help fill in the blanks. It is a great piece of Lake Odessa history and will be on display soon at the Museum....come and see it!!

BOY SCOUTS IN DAYS GONE BY

These three photos were taken from the album of George Morse. They were taken in the early 1920's of the Lake Odessa Boy Scout Troop on a camping trip. There is no identification on these but depict a wonderful era of excitement. There are very few records concerning the early days of the Boy Scouts in Lake Odessa. Most history comes from reports in the newspaper. Perhaps with some research more on this trip could be found. Does anyone have any information of this group in the
1920's...or know of anyone who would have been a scout at that time? Let us know any information that may help out!

What a view! This picture was taken of the Grand Trunk caboose from the lift that was used in painting the cupola of the depot. It is rare that we see it from this angle and it the grounds look pretty impressive! The painting of the depot has slowed down considerably due to the weather. The cupola is finished and the coat of light green paint has been completed. The trim still waits its final coat. A lot of work has been accomplished and thank you to all who have put in so many hours!

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Claimed to have been one of the only inland lighthouses in the State of Michigan, Ernest G. York completed it's construction in 1938. The Lighthouse on Jordan Lake was built with cement and was originally painted white. The actual lighthouse structure which originally stood alone is fifteen feet wide at the base and thirty feet high. The peak of the roof stands at thirty-seven feet. There are three levels within the lighthouse with the light and lens on yet another level. For many years a red blinker with Corning glass lens was operated each evening. A concession for the beach was operated on the first floor. A boat livery was maintained with the Yorks having twenty boats for rent. Mr. York died in 1942 and the lighthouse passed ownership over the years but remained a local landmark. Currently it is privately owned as a residence. The lighthouse has been declared a State Historical Site and holds many memories of Lake Odessa residents past and present.

This elk mount was one of the awesome displays that were part of the Hunting and Sports Show this past week-end at the Lake Odessa Museum. Many new faces were seen as a steady crowd enjoyed this annual show. Items included hunting trophies, mounts, pictures, equipment and related memorabilia. One interesting donation represented the "sports" idea with a golf club that was given to a local man by Frank A. Page. On Sunday there was even a live bobcat on display! You never know what you will find when visiting this museum! Thank you to all who worked hard to organize this event. This display is growing and many combined for a great success!

THE GROVE

The Village Park in Lake Odessa was originally called Wagar's Grove. In the early years it became known as the Grove and was a gathering place for many events. The intention of this park was to preserve a natural piece of land so that many could enjoy the trees in their original setting. After some early disagreements as to the use of this property it was deeded to the Village in 1889 with the following agreement: "that the land should not be sold by second parties or their successors in office nor the timber removed from the same but should be held as a public park for the use and benefit of the citizens of the Village of Lake Odessa." Soon after this in 1889 a fine was established for anyone found with cattle pastured in the Village Park. Over the years this haven has witnessed countless picnics, reunions, social gatherings and events. It has hosted concerts, rallies, art festivals and political meetings. But most of all, it has given many a place to relax. The addition of Swifty's Place play ground has added a wonderful dimension for children. Many stop and enjoy our Village Park and many hold special memories of this focal point in the history of Lake Odessa.

The past two and a half weeks have seen a great deal of progress in the painting of the Lake Odessa Depot! Twenty-four different volunteers have scraped, primed, painted and worked on this project. Several have donated added monies, food and helped out in many ways. The work is coming along steadily and the results are super! The cupola is completed except for the windows which need some extra work. Even the copper ball on top of the cupola received a cleaning and some fresh protection against the weather! Work will continue as volunteers are able to work. Thank you to everyone who is helping out in any way! What a team and what a super job!!!

On December 1, 1939, Ford Goodemoot purchased the Standard Oil Station from George Barkdull. This station was located on the southwest corner of Fourth Avenue and Tupper Lake St. and had been built about 1923. Ford was in business here until 1942 when he sold it to Homer Bartlett. This picture was taken about 1941 and shows Leon Stearns, who was the Bulk Dealer for Standard Oil, and Ford Goodemoot. There were several stations in Lake Odessa during this era as the automobile was quickly becoming the popular form of transportation.

What a great picture showing Fred Smith in his barber shop about 1919. Fred puchased this business from Archie Thomas in 1914 and was a barber in Lake Odessa for many years. Delos Trowbridge shot this photo which shows Fred cutting a Mr. Darby's hair. It is a wonderful "moment in time" as the early barber shops were a gathering place for the local men.

This photo shows the Lake Odessa Hunting Club about the year 1908. This local group of men traveled to Northern Michigan each year and spent weeks hunting deer and other game. This photo and many others of this club will be part of the display at the upcoming Hunting and Sports Show at the Lake Odessa Museum. This show will be held Sat. and Sun. Sept. 26 and 27. This flyer dated Aug. 31, 1894, is a real treausre! The flyer was printed as a program for the Ladies Aid Society of the M.E. Church for a program they were sponsoring. The great value in this is the many advertisements that were used in the printing of the program. Listed as merchants in 1894 are: L. A. Hunter-millinery, Mrs. R. C. Blair-Milliner, G. A. Weed-furniture dealer, McKelvey and Townsend-hardware, H. C. Morse-jeweler, Wright and Friend-general merchandise, E. C. Tew and Sons-General Merchandise, Mrs. Miner-Milliner, McCartney Bros.-dry goods, I. M. Tolles-dry goods, J. A. Robbins-jeweler. Miss L. Friedly has an advertisement at the lower part of the page and if noted is quite involved in the program. Others are listed and represent some early businesses in our village.

This photo was taken by Delos Trowbridge about 1913. The license plate on the car is dated 1913 and it is assumed to be current or possibly 1914. If there was a contest to see how many kids could be put into a car this may have been the winner!!! There is an inscription on the top of the photo that has faded over the years and only the first two words can be read...."A load...." We will begin the project on Thursday, September 10, with a pot luck supper at 6:30 p.m. There will be scraping, priming and painting throughout the entire week-end. What a great picture of Main Street Lake Odessa! The picture was taken in 1914 and shows the Lake Odessa Booster Club and appears to be a parade of some sort. The band is in the background and there are banners across the street. It is a wonderful street scene and shows the corner of Fourth Avenue and Second Street. The Farmers and Merchants Bank is in the foreground with the Weed Undertaking and Furniture Store next north. The street is still dirt as it was not paved until
1916. It is amazing how much Lake Odessa has changed over the years but the landscape is still so familiar!

MEDICAL PROFESSION HONORED

It was a privilege to be able to pay tribute to Medical Doctors, both past and present, at Depot Day this year. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society selects a business or profession each year and honors them with the creation of a permanent display in the museum. Over twenty doctors have practiced medicine in Lake Odessa since 1887 and each one was given tribute as part of the celebration. It was a treat to have families and the doctors themselves to share this time with. Those present were: descendants of Doctor Henry Carpenter-Lynda Carpenter Warner and family; Mrs. Alice Hoffs and daughters, Louise and Jayne; Dr. Jack and Helen Tromp and children, Nancy, Terry, Kathy and Tim; and Dr. and Mrs. Lee O. Stuart. Shown above is Mrs. Alice Hoffs who traveled from Kalamazoo to spend the day in Lake Odessa. At the age of 107, it was a true honor to have her share in this time as we recognized her husband, Dr. M. A. Hoffs. Also pictured above is Dr. Jack L. Tromp. Dr. Tromp practiced medicine in Lake Odessa for forty-four years, having his business longer than any other doctor. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society considers it an honor and it is with respect that we thank each Medical Doctor and their families for their gift of health, life and the improvement of Lake Odessa.

The 17th Annual Depot Day is now part of history and it was a great chapter! The morning tried to threaten bad weather but the sun came out and created a wonderful summer afternoon. The crowds remained steady throughout the day enjoying the entertainment, food and many historcial displays. It is always like old "hometown" week and many friends from days gone by reconnected. The primary goal of Depot Day is to celebrate the preservation of the Depot and the ongoing projects of the Museum. This was a success as we gathered and shared memories of the past and looked toward the future. Thank you to all who make this yearly event possible and we are already gearing up for Depot Day 2010!!! Hope to see you there!

TIME TO PAINT THE DEPOT!

The Depot is in need of a paint job and we are going to tackle the job this fall! The week-end of September 11-12 has been set aside as a time to scrape and paint and give a fresh new coat to this historical structure. This is aimed at being a community project and everyone's help is needed! A cost of $2,000.00 has been targeted with approximately $1,500.00 already donated. The photo above shows Dr. Jack L. Tromp (far right) with his staff in 1985. Dr. Tromp retired from his practice in 1997 and will be one of the many doctors-Past and Present-who will be honored at Depot Day. This Saturday, July 25, will be the 17th Annual Depot Day and it promises to be a great time as many participate in celebrating our local heritage. The purpose of Depot Day is to focus our attention on the restoration of the Lake Odessa Depot and the expansion of the museum property to include the Freight Station Museum, the caboose and the Hosford House. The day will be filled with entertainment, food and many displays relating varied aspects of our hometown history. Come on out and enjoy this unique event and be a part of the growing interest in Lake Odessa's past, present and future!

The recent LOHS Alumni Open House was a great success and many photos and items of interest always come to light. This photo is a great example and shows School Bus No. 3 on a trip taken to Bertha Brock Park in Ionia on May 31, 1946. Shown in the photo are left to right: Russel Fink, Grace Nicol, Mrs. Merlin Morgan and Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Clegy. Wouldn't it be great to have that school bus today.....well, maybe not to ride in but it would be fun to see!

FARMING DAYS

This is a great photo taken by Delos Trowbridge on may 9, 1913. It is identified as "Scientific Farming on Tom Ainsworth's farm near Lake Odessa. I. H. C. 45 H. P. Tractor and 10 plows."

On the back of the photo is a lengthier description as follows: "A plowing demonstration on Tom Ainsworth's 1200 acre farm 6 miles north of Lake Odessa, Ionia County, Michigan. Plowing, dragging and rolling forty acres at this demonstration." What a wonderful picture and even better is that someone took the time to fully identify this event. Farming has changed over the years but this is still an agricultural area and this will be of interest to many.

ALUMNI OPEN HOUSE

Familiar faces from days gone by filled the Lake Odessa Museum during the LOHS Alumni Open House on June 27. The Class of 1959 were the honored guests and many showed up to view the displays of classes from 1888 to 1963. In addition displays featuring the Rural Country Schools, Woodland, Sunfield and Clarksville..plus the growing Lakewood School collection. It was a great time as old acquaintences were renewed. On Sunday, June 28, an ice cream social was held and many came out to reminisce once more the childhood days of LOHS.

COUNTRY SCHOOL EXHIBIT

As part of the Annual LOHS Alumni Display all local country schools are included with a display of photos, documents, memorabilia and other items related to the one-room schools of this area. The exhibit will be at the Lake Odessa Museum Complex during the week-end of June 27-28 and will include all country schools within the present day Lakewood School District. The photo above depicts The Bippley School which was located in Odessa Twp. as District Number 7. There is no date with this photo with only a few of the students being identified. It is a wonderful visual of the early days of the one room school and will be a part of the upcoming display. If anyone has photos, historical items or anything related to the country schools the museum would be glad to display these as part of this annual event. WE'VE COME A LONG WAY!

We've come a long way since this picture was taken in 1995! This shows the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Depot Museum during Depot Day that year. This building has served us well and continues to be the focal point of the Lake Odessa Museum Complex. The restoration of this historic Pere Marquette Depot has been a successful venture for the Historical Society and the ongoing maintenance continues to give renewed life to this structure. Plans are underway to organize volunteers to give the Depot a new coat of paint. The week-end of September 11-13 has been set aside for scraping and painting. Cost for the project has been estimated at approximately $2,000.00 with over half of that amount donated already. If you are interested in helping out in any way please contact the Society. RALPH C. LAMBERT

Ralph C. Lambert (pictured above with his father Lewis Lambert) was selected for the Veterans Hall of Fame to represent the era of World War I. Ralph was nominated by his daughter Nora Hallenback. Ralph enlisted in the U. S. Army and served in Battery D 57th Artillery CAC. Nora wrote that: "Private Lambert boarded the converted mercantile cruiser OTRANTO for a destination overseas with 780 troops and 380 crew members. On a Sunday morning, off the coast of Ireland, and during a horrendous North Atlantic storm, the OTRANTO was rammed by the S. S. KASHMIR also carrying troops. The KASHMIR, although disabled, made it to port. There was a loss of many, many lives. One of the lucky survivors was dad."

WENDELL "BUD" SCHEIDT

Wendell Bernard "Bud" Scheidt was nominated by his daughter, Wendy J. Barnum, for the Veterans Hall of Fame. He represents the World War II era. Wendy wrote that: "My father enlisted in the military on June 15, 1943, immediately following graduation from Lake Odessa High School. Originally trained as an air cadet at Case Western Reserve University, he was transferred to the infantry when the army's need for more infantrymen became increasingly evident.....My father's military career came to an end in Belgium, 1945, when the jeep he was driving hit a land mine. When he recovered consciousness, he was in a hospital in Paris. Later transferred to a hospital in England then Chicago, he finished his recuperation at Fort Custer, where after several months, he was released. He was awarded the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct medal for his service."

LYLE FAULKNER

Selected to represent the post World War II era for the Veterans Hall of Fame was Lyle Faulkner. His daughter, Terri Slade, wrote the letter of nomination. She stated that: "My dad was in high school at the time of World War II and his parents refused to give their permission for him to quit high school and join the military so when he turned 18 in August of 1945 he enlisted in the Navy. He was taken by bus to Detroit to leave for basic training from there the following day. When they got up in the morning and went outside preparing to leave there were all kinds of people in the streets cheering. He asked someone what was going on and they tol dhim that the Japanese had just surrendered. He always told us, as kids, that they heard he was coming so they surrendered!"

JIMMIE LEE REESE

Jimmie Lee Reese was selected for the Veterans Hall of Fame to represent the Viet Nam era. Jimmie was nominated for this honor by his sister, Betty Soule. Jim went into the army and to Viet Nam in March of 1969. He served his country until November of 1970. When he returned home he suffered from severe diabetes. His health issues continued for many years. In 2006 Jimmie passed away as a result of a heart attack. Betty wrote in her nomination letter that: "Jim's many friends have many memories. He is missed by all who knew him."

NYLE YATES III

Nyle Yates III was selected for the Veterans Hall of Fame representing the War in Iraq. The letter of nomination for Nyle was submitted by a friend Jessica Cazarez-Harmon. Corporal Nyle Yates died on March 16, 2006, while serving his country in Iraq. Nyle was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, KY. Nyle grew up in the Lake Odessa area and attended Lakewood Public Schools. In Jessica's letter of nomination she wrote: "There isn't a day that goes by that Nyle Yates isn't remembered in our hearts and minds and by honoring him at this military tribute, his legacy will continue on in our community forever."

MILITARY TRIBUTE AND DISPLAY

There was standing room only on Friday evening, May 22, as the Lake Odessa Community gathered to pay tribute to the five inductees into the Veterans Hall of Fame. Chosen for this year's honor were: Ralph C. Lambert, Wendell Bernard "Bud" Scheidt, Lyle Faulkner, Jimmie Lee Reese and Nyle Yates III. Each of these honorees were highlighted with a display and a verbal tribute. Family members represented each veteran and accepted a Certificate of Honor. This was a highlight for the week-end which included a display covering all local veterans and those currently serving in the military. Many additional items were donated to the museum which adds greatly to this growing collection. Continue to watch this blog as biographies of each of those from the Veterans Hall of Fame will be featured.

This photo, dated July 3, 1950, not only shows the patriotic celebration of that year but also the street scene on the east side of Fourth Ave. Shown at the far left is the old Kroger Store and then the five buildings which have since been torn down. Today this is the parking lot area next to Dr. Barnett's building. It is hard to imagine that five structures were nestled in that small area but here is the proof! Nelson's News Stand is the most prominent of these wooden buildings which were some of the oldest on Main St. This is a classic photo of Lake Odessa during the 1950's....including the cars!!!

THE URTEL STORE

Located on the "north end" of town, Urtel's General Store was a long time business in the Village of Lake Odessa. The store was on the northeast corner of Fourth Avenue and Tupper Lake Street and was opened by Fred A. Urtel in 1913. Mr. Urtel continued in business for over thirty-five years when he sold out to Leroy Catt in 1948. How many remember Urtel's Store? HOSFORD HOUSE PROJECT

One of the current projects of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society is the restoration of the Hosford House. The photo above recently resurfaced and it was a great surprise to see a distant view of this house in its original location on Third Avenue. The house, built by Samuel O. Hosford in 1887, is shown in the photo as the second house from the left in the foreground. The original is quite dark but it is wonderful to have this depiction of the house in about 1910. One of the most imporant things shown in this view is the front porch which will need to be replaced. This view helps us to know the design of that porch and how it looked originally. Since the house has been moved from its Third Avenue location the Society has been able to set it upon a new foundation, completely replace the roof and clean out some of the interior debris. Funds are being raised to place new exterior siding on the structure. The total cost for the siding will be approximately $18,000.00. Any donations toward this project would be greatly appreciated and will help to further this project along.

MILITARY DISPLAY COMING SOON!

This display of military photos was exhibited during World War II in 1943. Community members were asked to bring a photo of their family members who were in the service. This was a great reminder of who was serving our country at that time. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society will be hosting a Military Display and Tribute during Memorial Day Week-end 2009. Displays will feature all eras from the Revolutionary War to the present. The Society is asking those that have photos, memorabilia and other items related to anyone who has served in the military at any time to please loan, donate or share your items for this display. It is the goal of the society to represent everyone who has served our country from the Lakewood area.

WOODLAND HIGH SCHOOL

On Saturday, May 16, the Woodland High School Alumni will hold their annual Alumni Reunion at the Woodland School. The Lake Odessa Area Historical Society chronicles all of our AREA history and this includes Woodland. The photo above was taken in 1907 of the Woodland School showing the interior of the first school building. There is no identification on this picture and if anyone can help with this please contact the Society. MAIN STREET

Even though this photo is not dated there is not any question where it is! Main Street Lake Odessa is unmistakable......the landscape has remained pretty constant over the years. Some things are noticeably changed today....the absence of the water tower, the brick street, etc. But, for the most part anyone who grew up in Lake Odessa would recognize the scene. The street was laid out as Fourth Avenue in 1887 as the town was first platted. It is hard to imagine but before this time a small creek ran from the west to the southeast directly through this area. The water still runs underground in what is known as the Brisbin Drain. The photo above depicts a quiet small town....one that holds a great deal of memories for many. The stores have changed, the people have changed but the street remains as a landmark of our history.

LOHS 1959

June 27, 2009, will soon be here and the Class of 1959 will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary! The photo above shows this class.....we don't have the names put with the faces so if anyone can give us identification that would be a great help! All classes will gather on June 27 for the Alumni Reunion and the Lake Odessa Museum Complex will host an Open House featuring all classes and the history of Lake Odessa High School. Make plans to be a part of this memorable time.....this is open to everyone in the community even if you didn't graduate from Lake Odessa High! We are working toward the inclusion and transition to Lakewood High School and its history and a display will be included covering that history also.

PLANTING THE FUTURE

It was great to have several of the "younger" generation share in the recent Mother-Daughter Tea. Planting strawberry plants was a treat and each one was able to take some home. One of the goals of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society is to continue to encourage younger interest and this is just one more example of this. Look for more activities as we plant for the future!

It was a busy time around the Museum this past week-end! That's exciting! There was the Garden's Club Perennial Exchange, the Mother-Daughter Tea and the Tri-Rivers Museum Tour. Lots of activity to kick off the month of May. Robin Michalski and Alma Gray organized the Mother-Daughter Tea which was a great success. Some new faces were in the crowd and that was great to see! A nice afternoon of sharing and good refreshments emphasised the special relationship between mothers, daughters and grandmothers. Thank you to all who helped make this a special time. In the midst of this, the Tri-Rivers Museum Tour brought in several out of town guests who got a taste of the many varied interests that are focused on here in Lake Odessa.

The Lake Odessa Garden Club held its annual Perrenial Exchange this past Saturday at the Lake Odessa Museum Complex. It was a great time to trade plants, get garden tips and be motivated to go home and garden! The Lake Odessa Garden Club is part of the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society and maintains the flower gardens on the museum grounds. Their dedication and expertise make a beautiful setting for the historical buildings. The Garden Club meets the first Monday of each month at the Lake Odessa Museum and is open to anyone interested in gardening. For more information please contact the Society. THE FAVORITE

It is still April and there have already been quite a few boats out on Jordan Lake this year! The lake has been a local recreational attraction for many years and continues to be a "favorite!" Soon after the establishment of Lake Odessa in 1887-88 a group of interested men organized the Jordan Lake Boat Association. This group consisted of William S. Hart, Stephen Haight, F. A. Sargeant and E. E. Wagar. In 1889 the Association purchased four acres of land on the shores of Jordan Lake which eventually became what today is the beach area. It was quickly ascertained that a "drawing card" was needed to allow people to enjoy the lake. It was decided to have a steam boat constructed for use on the lake. The group hired Charlie Scheidt to build the boat which was reported to have held between 100-150 individuals. The boat was built at Saranac and transported to Lake Odessa. The name "Favorite" was given to the little steamer as it became a favorite attraction to many. It is told that the steam boat would start at the beach pavilion with a full load. It would go west toward the hill at the west end of the lake, turn course down by the outlet, go down past Eagle Point and then on east past Jordan Cove. There were many sand bars in the cove and almost every time the boat would get stuck in the sand. Then row boats had to be taken out to pull the boat free. Many parties and celebrations were held on this boat with local bands playing on the steamer. This small boat boosted the resort business in Lake Odessa greatly. The photo above shows the Lake Odessa Band as it appeared during this era. This band frequently played on the steamer and could be heard for many miles.

MEMORIAL DAY 1946

Memorial Day will soon be upon us and these two photos remind us of that. These photos were taken at Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa on Memorial Day 1946. It appears that many children were involved and perhaps were part of a parade ending at the cemetery. The Historical Society is attempting to identify as many in these photos as possible. SCHOOL DAYS OF LONG AGO

This school photo was taken at the Odessa Center School about the years 1899-1900 and shows the school children of that day. It will soon be time for the Historical Society's annual school display and photos and items such as this will be the focus. The Society is working on collecting more information concerning all Rural Schools that were in the Lakewood School District. The Odessa Center School was located at the corner of Jordan Lake and Bippley Roads and is today remodeled into a residence. 50/50 RAFFLE WINNER

Congratulations to Roger Winkler who was the winner of the Society's 50/50 Raffle drawing. The drawing was held on Saturday, April 25, with over 500 tickets being sold. The photo above shows on the right John Waite, Society President, presenting Roger with the winner's check. The proceeds from this fund raiser will be used toward painting the Depot and exterior siding for the Hosford House.

The sales were fast and furious at this past week-end's Rummage Sale at the Lake Odessa Museum. This annual fund raiser helps support ongoing projects and generates a good profit each year. There are always bargains to be found and lots of "treasures" to be discovered! The crowd was steady on both Friday and Saturday with the tables pretty bare by the end. Thank you to all who donated and made this fund raiser another great success!!!

MOTHER-DAUGHTER TEA

On Sunday, May 3, the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society will host a Mother-Daughter Tea. The Tea will be held at the Lake Odessa Museum Complex at 1:30 p.m. All Mothers, Daughters and Ladies of the community are invited to attend. This will be a special time of sharing with Robin Michalski and Alma Gray planning the event. Light refreshments will be served with a short program included. Donations toward the museum will be accepted. Reservations are needed by calling Robin at 374-8416.

LAKE ODESSA U.B. CHURCH

The Lake Odessa United Brethren Church (an outgrowth of the West Odessa United Brethren in Christ Church) was built in Lake Odessa in 1895. It was located on the northwest corner of Fourth Ave. and Fourth Street. The Board of Trustees that was responsible for this construction consisted of: P. A. Wachs, Emanuel Cramer and Stephen Mallory. This picture was taken before 1946 when the church became known as the Lake Odessa Evangelical United Brethren Church. This also appears to be before 1923 when the church was remodeled and a full basement dug underneath. The church remained active until 1967 when it merged with Woodland Evangelical United Brethren Church and formed what is now Lakewood United Methodist Church located in Woodland Township of Barry County. Many early pioneers of this area can trace their religous roots to the West Odessa United Brethren in Christ Church and as Lake Odessa provided new directions the church also followed. Today the Lake Odessa church structure has been remodeled into a residence.
